Finding Your Purpose: The Journey to Self-Care and Alignment

“Living in alignment with your purpose is the ultimate form of self-care.” This quote resonates deeply with me, especially now, as I reflect on my journey.

At 52, some might think I’ve taken a long time to find my purpose, but I see the path I’ve walked as crucial to shaping who I am today.

Earlier this year, after a period of stress-induced ill health, I knew I needed a change. I was pushing through life, ticking all the boxes of a successful career, family responsibilities, and societal expectations, but I was disconnected from myself. My body was breaking down under the weight of multiple stress-induced illnesses, and I found myself feeling deeply unhappy and disillusioned. It became clear that something had to give, and for the first time, I allowed myself to pause and look inward. What did I enjoy? What was I good at? What truly brought me peace and happiness? As I started to explore these questions, I began to feel my way forward, trusting that the right path would emerge if I stayed true to myself.

A significant driver behind this journey was the desire for my daughters to see me happy and fulfilled—not just as their mother, but as a woman living a fulfilled and meaningful life. I’ve always believed that the most effective teaching is to demonstrate, to lead by example. I wanted to show them that it’s okay to prioritise your own happiness and to seek fulfillment regardless of the cards you are dealt in life. This wasn’t just a lesson I wanted to teach them; it was a truth I needed to live. I felt it vital for them to see that pursuing one’s passions and taking care of oneself are not only valid choices but essential parts of leading a balanced and healthy life.

The journey to finding your purpose isn’t always a straightforward path. It can feel like an elusive goal for many of us, especially when life is busy, and responsibilities pile up. There are expectations, societal norms, and practicalities to consider, all of which can cloud your vision and make you doubt your own desires. For me, those clouds were tied very much to the pressures of being a mum to three gorgeous children, each with varying levels of disabilities and Special Educational Needs. The demands on my time, energy, and emotional resilience were constant, and I often felt that my own needs came last. It was difficult to separate my role as a mother and wife from my individual aspirations, and I found myself wondering if pursuing something for me was even possible.

The process of finding my purpose required me to acknowledge these pressures while still giving myself permission to explore what I truly wanted (and needed!). It was about finding a balance between caring for my family and allowing space for my own growth. This was no easy feat, but as I began to focus on my passions and strengths, I found a sense of alignment that allowed me to be more present and fulfilled in all aspects of my life.

The Challenges of Finding Your Purpose

The path to discovering purpose can often feel daunting, with many twists and turns, as I would come to discover. It requires courage to confront the uncertainty and patience to embrace the evolving journey. I’ve had to learn that Purpose is not a destination but a continuous process of self-discovery, growth, and change.

How Purpose Connects to Self-Care

Finding your purpose is not just about career choices or life goals; it’s deeply connected to self-care. When you live in alignment with what truly matters to you, everything else starts to fall into place. Instinctively, you begin to prioritise your well-being, make choices that nourish your mind and body, and let go of what no longer serves you.

Tips for Finding Your Purpose

Reflect on what brings you joy: Think back to moments when you felt truly alive, excited, or at peace. These moments are clues to what may be aligned with your purpose.

Allow yourself to explore: Give yourself the freedom to try new things without fear of failure.

Trust your intuition: If something doesn’t feel right, don’t force it. If something excites you, pursue it.

Embrace the journey: Your purpose may evolve as you do, and that’s okay.

Make time for self-care: Prioritise activities that nourish your mind and body. The clearer your mind is, the easier it will be to connect with your purpose.

Finding your purpose can happen at any age, and the journey itself is a significant part of what prepares you for the challenges ahead. For me, aligning with my purpose has been transformative, not only in my career but in my overall well-being. I am the healthiest, happiest, and most peaceful I’ve ever been. So, wherever you are on your path, take a moment to look inward, listen to yourself, and trust the process. You are exactly where you’re meant to be.
