The Silent Weight Of Stress

As I approach my 52nd birthday, I’ve found myself reflecting on stress and how deeply it affects us women, especially at this stage of life. Between managing a family, growing a business, and going through the transitions of peri-menopause, stress has become a constant companion. And the crazy part? We often don’t realize how much it’s weighing us down until we hit a breaking point.
For me, that breaking point came earlier this year. I was signed off from work for four weeks—something that had never happened in my entire working life. I was juggling so many responsibilities and expectations that I didn’t even notice how much stress was taking its toll. Those weeks off forced me to reevaluate my choices, especially when it came to my health. It was a wake-up call that I couldn’t keep putting myself last.

How Stress Impacts Us, Especially Now

At this stage, many of us are navigating peri-menopause, which brings its own set of challenges. Hormonal changes can amplify stress, making everything feel more overwhelming. Things that didn’t bother us a few years ago—like sleep disturbances, mood swings, or weight gain—suddenly seem harder to handle.
Cortisol, our body’s stress hormone, can be a real troublemaker during this time. It’s linked to that stubborn weight around our midsection, disrupted sleep, and even lowered immunity. And when we’re already feeling the effects of hormonal shifts, it can quickly feel like we’re losing control of our own bodies.

The Importance of Self-Care and Self-Awareness

After my time off, I had to relearn what self-care really means. It’s more than just the occasional spa day (though those are lovely!). It’s about making small, consistent changes to look after ourselves, mentally and physically, every day. It’s about tuning in to what our bodies are telling us. For me, self-care looks like setting boundaries, saying no when I need to, and letting go of perfectionism.
We often take care of everyone else—our families, our work, even our communities—but we tend to forget about ourselves. And at this point in life, we can’t afford to ignore our own well-being anymore. Stress isn’t just something to ‘get through’; it’s something we need to manage if we want to feel our best and live long, healthy lives.

Moving Forward with Self-Awareness

As I move through this next phase of life, I’ve realized that I deserve to thrive, not just survive. And so do you. It’s okay to take time for yourself, to say no to the things that drain you, and to say yes to the things that bring you peace and joy. Stress might be unavoidable, but how we handle it is something we can change.
So here’s my reminder to you—and to myself—that we deserve to prioritize our well-being. It’s not selfish. It’s necessary.

How do you manage stress in your life? I’d love to hear from you—whether it’s small self-care rituals or moments that made you stop and reassess your own well-being. Drop a comment below and let’s support each other on this journey.
